The Pentagon is conducting research on using rats to detect mines and explosives. Rats are much more mobile, easier to transport, can get into hard-to-reach places, are cheaper to train, and consume less food than dogs. Rats could also be used by emergency teams in the future for search-and-rescue operations. APOPO has been using Gambian Pouched rats to search out land mines in Africa since 1995. They also use them to detect tuberculosis.

Other countries that use rodents are Israel with mice to sniff out drugs and bombs at airports and Colombia is training lab rats to detect hidden explosives.
